Project follow-up

30.5.2004

She is afloat! The liftingtruck came today at 1700 hrs, and so Carina got into her right element! After one night hanging in the straps she was swollen enough to be left alone with an electrical bilgepump.

4.6.2004

Rigging is done, and most of the equipment aboard. I start my voyage towards Sipoo, where I have a place at the Yacht club Svartbacks Segelsallskap for the summer.

6.6.2004

Arrival at 1100 hrs in the morning to Svartback. The picture above is taken here! No sailing so far, 'cause I was alone bringing her home and the weather is at the moment quite nasty, strong winds (up to 13 m/s) and from wrong direction...

15.9.2004

Summer has come to its end, its time to lay up Carina on her winter bed. We had some really nice weeks during the summer sailing around in the archipelago, mostly singlehanded, and we even took part in a race!!!Position was 3rd of 11 boats, and we were the only wooden boat! Nice going! (It was a race over some 20 miles, and since all boats were different, the LYS-counter was used to balance the differences). This winter carina will be much closer to my home, actually only 300 meters away laid up on the yard of a warehousingcompany which is across the street! The lifting went ok, as also the transport from Sipoo to Kerava. A few days later I had finished the shed around her and emptied her from all supplies and stuff.

26.11.2004

The first snow came a week ago, today it's -10 C, and really no interest at all starting to do something...I guess it's time to settle back and wait for X-mas, reading books about wooden boats and making plans for next summer!

4.10.2003

We are leaving in the early morning with a 16,5 m lorry to get Carina transported from Kerimaki to Loviisa, a total roundtrip of some 750 kms. Arrival at Kerimaki where we meet the seller and the crane, which will lift her onboard the trailer. The lifting goes very smoothly and after some 20 minutes she is secured and fastened with several lashings, and the trip can continue southbound.

At 1700 hrs we arrive at Loviisa where the lift-off starts. It was actually a reversal of the loading, only now the lifting equipment is much heavier, and slight difficulties occur when trying to get the vessel out from the trailer. All ends up well, and she is put on place without any damage during transport.

5.10.2003

At 1000 hrs we start building the winterhouse around her. It was from the beginning clear, that we needed to build an enough large hall around her so that we would be able to work on her during the winterseason. Finally, after some 5 hours work, a cover measuring 3 x 8 meters, and some 3 meters height was finished. Now she will rest secure through the winter!

11.10.2003

Rainy weather, +2 degrees centigrade, very high humidity! But under the shed it is dry, so I start removing varnish from the side plankings. My best friend seems to be the electric heat-blower and a standard scraper.

18.10.2003

Still raining, today a very windy day. I start replacing some parts of the wall of the shed, so that they won't blow away! Then the work continues, now scraping the other side. Soon all varnish will be gone!

25.11.2003

Today's task will be starting to remove paint from below the waterline. It seems to stick there much harder as the varnish above the waterline, and I find my eccentric sander to be a good tool. Sadly, after some 5 hours working, the machine tilts. It just works like a rotating sander, which is dangerous to use! Later in the evening I brake the sander in pieces and find a bearing totally clugged with dust. Cleaning it up and adding some oil makes wonders, it works again!

28.12.2003

Total chaos at the dock! A heavy winterstorm blew over Finland 27-28.12. with wind speeds up to 21 m/s. The covering over Carina is partly collapsed, and the whole housing has moved 1 meter backwards and 1 meter to the side, leaving the port side wall now scrubbing against the hull. I decided to remove the canopy from the roof, and simply wrap it around the hull without any framework. Have to rebuild it later. This is the fun part of owning a wooden boat, feelings are quite destructive at the moment!

4.1.04

Down at the dock with some more planking & tools + a friend in order to rebuild the shed around the boat! Started with lowering the whole construction with some 40 cm, then nailing more planking on the sides between every leg so that the construction would be harder. Then lifting the roof back on its place and securing it! 3 hours later, and now I hope it will stand up until spring through the next winter storms which inevitabely will come, sooner or later!

18.1.04

Paying a visit to the dock. Everything ok, though we have got some snow during the past weeks, so there is approx 20 cm, and the first thing to do is to get it off the roof over Carina. Temperature today -3 C, perfect weather for working! Today's task is some sanding, so I start with the inner sides of the cockpit. It is built in mahogany, and have become mostly grey in colour during the past years of neglect...3 hours later, and some 10 sheets of sandpaper shorter, I have a nice looking cockpit from the inside, ready to get some varnish as soon as the weather & temperature are ok for varnishing.  Meanwhile at home, the continious work on my rudder goes on. Noted, that the wood is partly bad/rotten in the upper end of the rudder, where the steering pin is attached. This has been caused by the two sheets of mahogany which were screwed and fastened on each side of the rudder, thus making the fastening point for the steering pin. Water and moisture had found its way beneath the mahogany fittings and the rudder itself (oak) and the only thing to do is to cut out the damaged part and make a new one! Also the rudder blade that is built of two halfs, was gone apart, so after finishing the both halfs, some epoxy-glue and a good number of clamps made it possible to fix the pieces together again. So far the time schedule looks good, now just waiting for next saturday, so that I can continue with the hull....

10.4.2004

been lazy filling in the site. Spring is on its way,

and so is also a lot of thing already done. The

new stern as seen on the frontpage is mounted,

the hull is scraped and sande on the outside down

tho the wood, and the linseedoil just sucks in to it!

Quite a lot of carpentry still to be done.
